Located six kilometres from Sydney’s Central Business District, Petersham is considered to be a centre of Portuguese culture. The surrounding suburbs and Petersham form a European hub in Sydney with Marrickville being known for its Greek cuisine, Petersham for Portuguese and Haberfield for Italian restaurants and cafes. The New Canterbury Road, which passes through the district houses most of the Portuguese business establishments here, including restaurants and shops.

The northern part of the road contains a mix of cafes, bookstores, fashion and clothing shops along with a couple of stores selling homeware such as furniture and utensils.
