We love cleaning in Mortlake
Originally called Bottle Point, Mortlake got its current name from its namesake Mortlake, along the Thames River in London. Carving its path through Sydney to the harbour, the Parramatta River provides the city with some of the most picturesque views, amazing bays and peaceful parks. Historically called the ‘Thames of the Antipodes’, the suburbs surrounding the Parramatta River were also named after localities near the Thames in London – namely, Greenwich, Woolwich and Putney.
Mortlake also has the Mortlake Vehicular Ferry, which is also called the Putney Punt. One of the last of its kind still operational today, this ferry still operates daily transporting vehicles across the Parramatta River. Located across the river are the suburbs of Putney and Tennyson Point, which are home to the Kissing Point Park and the Putney Park, located off Kendall Bay and Majors Bay respectively.
Located at the waterside tip of this suburb is Wangal Reserve, a public recreational area and park. Mortlake was also home to one of the first sites of development of the Australian Gas Light Company, which set up shop here in the late 1800s. Later, after the plant closed down, the area around it was redeveloped to form parts of what is today called Breakfast Point.
