Eltham is a suburb of Melbourne in Australia located about twenty-five kilometers north east of Melbourne’s central business district, it is located in the local government area of the Shire of Nillumbik, according to the 2016 census Eltham has over eighteen thousand residents. The suburb is one of the areas that have policies on land use designation in order to retain areas of largely undeveloped, wild, or agricultural land surrounding or neighboring urban areas.

The suburb has many tourist attractions like the artist colony Montsalvat and the Diamond Valley Railway, the largest miniature railway in Australia. The suburb is home to a historic wooden railway trestle bridge. The bridge was built in the early 20th century and is the only wooden trestle bridge still in use in Melbourne’s electric railway network. It is also one of the few wooden trestle bridges in use in Victoria.

The suburb has a special appeal to artists and many say it is because Eltham is famous for the Montsalvat artist community, they built a rustic array of medieval-style buildings in the early 20th century. Apart from the Montslavat artist community, the suburb has also been home to famous artists such as Walter Withers and Neil Douglas as well as writers like Alan Marshall and Mervyn Skipper.
