Lemons to Remove Grease

Do you know lemons are one of the most versatile natural cleaning ingredients for the home? You can use this amazing fruit to remove all sorts of dirt and stains. This citrus fruit is also an excellent natural disinfectant and odour remover.  Here is how to use lemons to remove stains for your device:

Step 1: Combine 1 cup water with a cut lemon in a microwave-safe bowl.  

Step 2: Microwave on high for several minutes until mixture starts to boil and the window steams up.  

Step 3: Leave to cool for approximately 5 minutes.    

Step 4: Open the door. Wipe with a clean cloth.  

Step 5: All done! A brand microwave that smells wonderfully fresh at the same time!  

Vinegar or apple cider vinegar

Vinegar and apple cider vinegar is great for degreasing microwaves. Here is how to use vinegar or apple cider vinegar to degrease the microwave: 

Step 1: Mix one cup of water with a few tablespoons of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl.     

Step 2:  Microwave on high for several minutes until mixture starts to boil and the window steams up.  

Step 3: Leave to cool for 5 minutes. Wipe with a cloth.    

Remove grease from microwave doors

It’s not just the inside of the microwave that needs wiping. You also need to wipe grease and smudges from your microwave door. Here’s a simple way to degrease microwave doors.   

Step 1: Greasy and dirty gasket can be wiped with a damp sponge dipped in a weak baking soda and water solution.   

Step 2: Greasy microwave windows are best with a solution made from 50/50 white vinegar and water. Rinse to remove vinegary odour after.    

Step 3: For really greasy microwave windows, scrub gently with a sudsy solution made from fragrant-free dishwashing liquid and water.  Use a scratch-free scouring pad or sponge to prevent scratching the glass.    

How to remove stuck-on food from a microwave

Food stuck inside the microwave can be easily removed by following this hack:  

Step 1: Food stuck on the turntable can be simply washed off with hot water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. If stain is stubborn, soak the turntable overnight in the sink. It will be easily removable the next morning.    

Step 2: A magic eraser is wonderful to peel away stubborn food stuck inside the microwave wall or door. You can buy magic erasers from your local supermarket.        

Prevent your microwave from getting too dirty

If you make it a habit to regularly wipe down the microwave, it will become less of a hassle later on.   Here are some simple hacks to maintain the microwave in your home: 

Use microwave-safe containers with lids

When heating food in the microwave, stick to using microwave-safe containers with lids to prevent food spillage.  

Use glad wrap 

Putting cling film over a plate or bowl can prevent food from spilling when cooking inside a microwave.  

Check your cooking time

Cooking or heating food to the right temperature in the microwave is a good way to prevent spillage from overheating.  

Wipe down after each use

A quick wipe down of your microwave after each use is a good way to maintain your microwave. It will save you time from having to deal with a heavily soiled microwave later.

The humble microwave is more than just a leftover warmer. Here are 10 amazing things you can do in a microwave:

#1: Revive old mascara

Don’t throw out your favourite mascara. You can blitz it back to life in your microwave.  Put the mascara next to a cup of water.  Microwave 30 to 40 seconds on high.  

#2: Refresh stale bread

Turn stale old bread to a freshly baked loaf. Slice bread. Wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for 10 seconds. Repeat until bread is hydrated.

#3: Crisp bacon

Forget all that grease splatter. If you want super crispy bacon the easy way, wrap the bacon in a piece of paper towel and blitz in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes. The paper towel absorbs most of the oil leaving you with super crispy bacon.

#4: Froth milk

Who needs to spend money on a state-of-the-art milk frother when you can easily do it on the microwave? Put cold milk in a glass jar. Put the lid on. Shake it up.  Blitz on high for 30 seconds (with the lid off).

#5: Dehydrate fruit or vegetable

Cut fruit or vegetable thinly using a mandolin. Wipe the turntable and place the cut fruit or vegetable directly on the turntable. Cook for 30 minutes on high. This simple hack is good for drying fresh herbs as well, so you don’t have to throw them out anymore.

#6: Poach the perfect egg

Add ½ cup cold water into a microwave-safe coffee mug, bowl or dish. Crack an egg. Cover with a saucer. Cook on high for 30 seconds. The egg is ready when the whites are fully cooked. Add salt and pepper to taste. 

#7: Liquify honey

A quick fix for crystallised honey. Uncap the jar. Place in microwave on high for 30 to 60 seconds. 

#8: Remove wax

Love the candle jar you bought? You can remove old wax to reuse this jar by simply microwaving the leftover wax in the microwave. Before you microwave, make sure the jar is microwave-safe first. The entire process takes no more than 20 seconds!

#9: Clean your chopping board

The microwave is a quick and efficient way to disinfect plastic chopping boards. Wash the board with soap and lemon juice. Heat on high for one minute.
